Tourist revival boost for Fermanagh village

Published on:  14 Mar 2006

The County Fermanagh village of Ederney is to benefit from a major £550,000 investment which it is hoped will put it firmly on the tourist map.

Ederney Community Development Trust (ECDT) have announced the start of building work on a project which will provide a guest inn with 6 en-suite bedrooms, a licensed restaurant, and ancillary accommodation on the site of a former derelict garage on the edge of the village Main Street.

The project is supported by the International Fund for Ireland and the Department for Social Development under their co-funded Community Regeneration Improvement Programme (CRISP), Fermanagh District Council, the EU Building Sustainable Prosperity Programme and the local community.

Leo Mulligan, Chairman of Ederney Community Development Limited is delighted with commencement of the project build and he said, "This has been the most challenging of projects for the group so far, with many funding issues to embrace from the proposed catering facility's conception. However, in the last year or so significant strides forward in progressing the licensed guest inn and restaurant project were achieved.  Our key targets in acquiring sufficient project funding, meeting planning and design requirements, the appointment of a contractor for the 'turn-key' project were met as well and the recruitment of a suitable tenant to operate the facility. It has been a long held view for both the Ederney development group and our partner Ederney Trust that the Guest Inn Project will provide an essential element to Ederney’s infrastructure. This Tourist Board approved project will facilitate employment opportunities both during its construction and when it becomes operational later this year.  We appreciate the support we have received from the funders and the community and look forward to the opening of the facility in the latter part of this year."

International Fund for Ireland Chairman Denis Rooney said, “The Ederney Community Development Trust have worked extremely hard to get this project developed and it’s good to see it underway.  With its proximity to Lough Erne and water based sports facilities and within a short distance of a number of tourist amenities and attractions such as Castle Archdale Country Park and Belleek Pottery Visitor Centre, the project will have significant potential to increase the level of awareness of the area as a tourist destination.”

A spokesman for the Department for Social Development said, “The Department is delighted to see the beginning of the Guest Inn Project in Ederney. It will provide much needed tourist facilities in the village and will also provide new jobs for local people.”

Council Chairman, Stephen Huggett noted, “This is an excellent example of a community led economic initiative which will play a significant role in the regeneration of Ederney. The project will make a major contribution to the social and economic fabric of the area, creating much needed new jobs and providing a high quality facility which will attract both locals and tourists to the Ederney area. The Council is delighted to support the development of the Guest Inn and wishes
it every success in the future”.
